VAT registration thresholds
Under current law, VAT registration is required once annual turnover exceeds NPR 50 lakh for goods or NPR 30 lakh for services or mixed businesses. Some business types must register regardless of turnover. The standard VAT rate is 13%. Thresholds can change with each year's Finance Act, so check before you rely on them.

Frequently asked questions
Do I have to file VAT returns if I had no sales?
Yes. A VAT-registered business must file its monthly return even when there were no sales or purchases. A missed return is fined Rs. 1,000.
I received a notice from the tax office. What should I do?
Don't ignore it; notices carry response deadlines. Share the notice and your records, and I'll help you respond, prepare for the assessment and, if needed, file for administrative review or appeal.
Can I reduce the penalties on old unfiled returns?
Until Poush end 2083 (14 January 2027), yes. File all returns up to FY 2082/83 by then and you pay only the base tax plus 1%; the fees and interest are waived.
